LINCOLN – Lexington, Scottsbluff, Lincoln and Fremont have been chosen as the sites for new telephone call centers to assist those seeking food stamps and other welfare assistance.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services today announced the sites, which will have between 50 and 150 employees.
The customer service centers are being established as an cost-saving measure. The state hopes to save $8.4 million a year and cut about 225 state jobs by 2012 by having people apply online or by telephone for services, rather than dealing with caseworkers in local offices.
The first calls will be received by the calls centers in fall of 2010. By 2012, state officials said that nearly 400 economic assistance staff will be located in the centers, and about 250 will continue to be located in local social services offices.
