Department of Veterans Affairs Opens Center in Muskogee Oklahoma

Department of Veteran Affairs -  9/18/2007

The opening of a Department of Veterans Affairs educational call center in Muskogee offers several pluses to Muskogee’s economic picture.

The center will eventually employ 175 people. Forty-five are already in training at the VA Regional Office downtown.

Employees at the center will make decent wages and see rapid pay increases — a starting annual salary of about $28,000, which increases to $35,000 the second year.

Though call centers usually face instability due to rapid technological changes and global market pressures, the VA is a secure agency which should lend stability to the new jobs.

New jobs

WHAT: Department of Veterans Affairs call center.

PAY: Starting wage of about $28,000 per year.

HOURS: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

TO APPLY: All applications for jobs at the new call center must be submitted via the Internet. Notice of when and how to apply will be found by accessing www.usajobs.opm.gov. Applications will not be taken at the VA Regional Office in Muskogee.

Lastly, the VA will renovate and make use of a building that has been empty for a number of years.

The VA had its reasons for locating the center in Muskogee, certainly one of them was the lower cost of available property here. But we believe the fact that the Muskogee VA center is handling about one-third of the payouts to veterans among four centers was a deciding factor
